GTA 6 Gameplay: Everything Rockstar Has Revealed So Far

Grand Theft Auto VI has been surrounded by speculation for years, but we now have a much clearer picture of what actually playing Rockstar’s next open-world blockbuster will be like.

With trailers, screenshots and the recent Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, Rockstar has provided its most substantial look yet at GTA 6 gameplay and the enormous world being built around Jason and Lucia.

The extended presentation was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, according to Rockstar, and showcases what the company calls the biggest and most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.

So what has Rockstar actually revealed about GTA 6 gameplay, and which supposed features are still speculation?

Here’s everything we know so far.

What Will GTA 6 Gameplay Be Like?

At its heart, GTA 6 remains recognizably Grand Theft Auto.

Players will explore a huge open world, drive vehicles, encounter criminals and other characters, become involved in robberies and experience a story centred around crime.

But GTA 6 is taking that familiar formula into a much more detailed modern setting.

The game takes place across the fictional state of Leonida, including Vice City and several very different surrounding regions.

At the centre of the story are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

Rockstar says the pair find themselves caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida after an apparently easy score goes wrong, forcing them to rely on one another to survive.

That relationship appears likely to be central not only to the story but also to many of the criminal situations players encounter.

Is the GTA 6 Extended Look Actual Gameplay?

This is an important distinction.

Rockstar describes its August 27 presentation as an extended look at GTA 6 and states that it was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.

That gives us a much better indication of the game’s actual visual presentation than purely promotional artwork.

However, “in-game footage” doesn’t necessarily mean every moment shown represents uninterrupted player-controlled gameplay.

Some footage can come from cutscenes, scripted sequences or other in-engine moments.

It’s therefore better to describe the presentation as official in-game footage rather than assume every sequence demonstrates exactly what the player will directly control.

Even with that distinction, it represents our clearest official look yet at Rockstar’s vision for GTA 6.

GTA 6 Will Be a Single-Player Experience

One thing Rockstar has explicitly confirmed is that Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.

That matters because of the enormous popularity of GTA Online.

Rockstar’s initial GTA 6 launch information is focused on Jason and Lucia’s story rather than presenting GTA VI itself as an online-only or multiplayer game.

At this stage, players buying GTA 6 should therefore expect a substantial story-driven single-player experience.

We shouldn’t assume exactly what Rockstar’s longer-term online plans will be until the company announces them.

Jason and Lucia Are at the Centre of GTA 6

GTA 6’s gameplay and story revolve around Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

Jason grew up around criminals and grifters before joining the Army in an attempt to escape his troubled teenage years.

He later ended up in the Leonida Keys working for local drug runners.

Lucia’s story is very different.

Her father taught her to fight from an early age, and fighting for her family eventually landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary.

After getting out, she’s determined to improve her life rather than fall back into the same circumstances.

Rockstar repeatedly presents Jason and Lucia together, and their relationship appears fundamental to GTA 6.

Exactly how switching between them will work throughout the entire game hasn’t been fully detailed by Rockstar, so we shouldn’t simply assume it will function identically to GTA V.

Robberies Appear to Be a Major Part of GTA 6

Crime has always driven Grand Theft Auto, and robberies are clearly an important part of Jason and Lucia’s world.

Rockstar describes the pair’s situation as beginning when an easy score goes wrong.

Several of the revealed characters also have direct connections to robberies and criminal operations.

Raul Bautista, for example, is an experienced bank robber constantly looking for talented people prepared to take major risks for major rewards.

Rockstar says Raul’s recklessness increases the stakes with every score.

Jason is also involved with drug runners in the Keys, while Brian Heder uses him to help with local shakedowns in exchange for living rent-free at one of his properties.

This all suggests criminal jobs and scores will play a significant role in the story.

What Rockstar hasn’t yet provided is a complete breakdown of how planning, executing or replaying robberies will work mechanically.

Driving and Vehicles Return

It wouldn’t be Grand Theft Auto without vehicles.

Rockstar’s GTA 6 material shows a wide variety of cars, motorcycles and boats throughout Leonida.

The game’s diverse geography should make those different forms of transportation particularly important.

Vice City provides dense urban streets and highways, while the Leonida Keys contain extensive waterways and island roads.

Grassrivers offers wetlands, while other areas take players into industrial environments, faded coastal communities and wilderness.

Rockstar’s Ultimate Edition information also reveals a substantial collection of named vehicles and vehicle-related businesses, including the ’95 Grotti Cheetah, Ganado Retro Build, Shitzu Squalo, ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy, Rideout Customs Mod Shop and One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop.

That doesn’t tell us every detail about GTA 6’s driving mechanics, but vehicles are clearly going to remain an important part of the experience.

Boats Could Be More Important in GTA 6

One particularly interesting aspect of Leonida is the amount of water.

The Leonida Keys consist of tropical islands and waterways, while Jason’s associate Brian Heder operates from a boat yard and has a history of smuggling.

Rockstar’s official imagery also prominently features boats and coastal environments.

This could make boats more useful for travelling around parts of GTA 6 than they were in some previous GTA games.

We don’t yet know exactly how extensive the boating mechanics will be, though, so claims about particular boat activities or missions should remain speculation until Rockstar confirms them.

GTA 6 Has a Much More Varied World Than Vice City Alone

Vice City may be the headline location, but GTA 6 isn’t confined to one city.

Rockstar has revealed several major regions across Leonida, including:

Vice City

Leonida Keys

Grassrivers

Port Gellhorn

Ambrosia

Mount Kalaga National Park

The environments range from beaches and dense urban streets to tropical islands, wetlands, industrial areas and wilderness.

This variety could have a major impact on gameplay simply because different environments naturally create different ways of travelling and exploring.

If you want a closer look at each region, our GTA 6 map and locations guide covers all six areas Rockstar has officially revealed so far.

Wildlife Is Part of Leonida

Rockstar’s depiction of Leonida includes plenty of wildlife.

Alligators are perhaps the most obvious example and have featured prominently in official GTA 6 imagery.

The wider environments also include wetlands, coastal areas and wilderness that provide opportunities for wildlife to appear outside Vice City’s urban centre.

How deeply wildlife will interact with gameplay remains to be seen.

Rockstar hasn’t published a comprehensive GTA 6 animal list or explained every wildlife mechanic, so this is another area where it’s important not to turn trailer observations into supposed confirmed features.

GTA 6 Appears to Put Enormous Emphasis on World Detail

One of the clearest impressions from Rockstar’s official material is the sheer density of Leonida.

Vice City is shown with crowded streets, nightlife, beaches, businesses and heavy traffic.

Beyond the city are smaller communities, industrial environments, swamps, islands and wilderness.

Rockstar describes GTA 6 as its biggest and most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.

That’s a significant claim, although it shouldn’t be interpreted as confirmation of specific features Rockstar hasn’t announced.

For example, online speculation has suggested everything from highly interactive buildings to sophisticated NPC schedules.

Some of those ideas may ultimately prove correct.

But unless Rockstar demonstrates or confirms them, they shouldn’t be presented as established GTA 6 gameplay features.

What Activities Will GTA 6 Have?

Rockstar hasn’t yet published a definitive list of every side activity available in GTA 6.

However, its official material gives us glimpses of the wider lifestyle and entertainment culture surrounding Vice City and Leonida.

We see nightlife, music, beaches, boats, cars and businesses alongside the criminal side of Jason and Lucia’s story.

Rockstar has also introduced characters connected to several different parts of Leonida’s culture.

Boobie Ike has interests spanning real estate, a strip club and a recording studio.

Dre’Quan Priest is trying to establish himself in the music business through Only Raw Records, while Real Dimez — Bae-Luxe and Roxy — are pursuing success as performers.

These characters indicate that GTA 6’s world extends considerably beyond robberies and car chases.

Exactly which businesses, entertainment venues or other locations players will be able to interact with directly is something Rockstar still needs to clarify.

Will GTA 6 Have Weapon Customization?

Rockstar’s Ultimate Edition information provides some interesting clues regarding weapons.

The announced content includes Hawk and Little Morgan Revolvers, Personalized Weapon Variants and an Exclusive Weapon Pattern among its additional items.

That confirms weapons and weapon variants form part of GTA 6’s content.

However, we still don’t have a complete official breakdown of the game’s broader weapon customization system.

Rather than assume GTA 6 will reproduce GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2’s systems exactly, it’s better to wait for Rockstar to explain how weapons and customization work in the final game.

Will GTA 6 Have Car Customization?

There are strong indications that vehicle customization will remain important.

Rockstar has officially named businesses such as Rideout Customs Mod Shop and One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop as part of the Ultimate Edition content.

The presence of dedicated mod shops clearly connects vehicles with customization in GTA 6.

What we don’t yet know is the full range of modifications available to every player or how extensive the system will be compared with GTA V and GTA Online.

More details are likely to emerge as Rockstar continues revealing the game.

How Good Do the GTA 6 Graphics Look?

GTA 6 is visually ambitious.

Rockstar’s Extended Look was captured from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, giving players an official look at Leonida running on current console hardware.

The footage and screenshots demonstrate detailed characters, dense environments, reflections, water, vegetation, traffic and lighting across very different times of day and locations.

Rockstar’s official site currently lists GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

A PC version hasn’t been officially announced.

For more on that situation, our GTA 6 PC release date guide explains what Rockstar has confirmed and how its previous PC releases provide context for what could happen later.

Will GTA 6 Run at 60 FPS?

This is precisely the kind of question where we need to distinguish speculation from confirmation.

Rockstar hasn’t provided a complete public breakdown of every GTA 6 graphics mode, resolution target and frame-rate option across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Therefore, we aren’t going to claim a guaranteed 30 FPS or 60 FPS mode without official confirmation.

The Extended Look demonstrates how the game looks running from captured PS5 in-game footage, but that alone shouldn’t be used to manufacture technical specifications Rockstar hasn’t published.

We’ll update this guide when Rockstar provides official performance information.

Is GTA 6 Online Confirmed?

Rockstar has explicitly described Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience in its current pre-order announcement.

Given GTA Online’s enormous success, speculation about GTA 6’s future online component is understandable.

But speculation isn’t confirmation.

Until Rockstar formally announces its online plans for GTA 6, details about a supposed “GTA 6 Online,” its release date, player count, map or features should be treated cautiously.

For now, Rockstar’s official GTA VI marketing is centred on Jason and Lucia’s single-player story.

When Does GTA 6 Come Out?

GTA 6 is scheduled to release on Thursday, November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Pre-orders are already available.

Digital pre-orders can begin pre-loading on November 12, 2026, while Rockstar’s physical code-in-box version is also scheduled to become available from November 12 to support pre-loading.

The physical version contains a download code rather than a game disc.

GTA 6 Gameplay: What We Know So Far

GTA 6 is still months away, so there are plenty of details Rockstar hasn’t revealed.

But the picture is becoming considerably clearer.

We know GTA 6 is a single-player experience centred around Jason and Lucia and set across the sprawling state of Leonida.

We know cars, motorcycles and boats feature heavily in Rockstar’s material.

We know robberies and criminal operations are integral to the characters and story.

We know the world extends far beyond Vice City into islands, wetlands, industrial communities, coastal towns and wilderness.

And Rockstar’s latest Extended Look gives us the strongest official indication yet of how this enormous world will look in-game.

What we don’t yet have is equally important.

Rockstar hasn’t provided a complete list of side activities, every gameplay mechanic, comprehensive technical specifications or detailed future online plans.

Until it does, those gaps will inevitably generate rumours.

We’ll continue updating this guide as Rockstar reveals more, while keeping confirmed GTA 6 gameplay information separate from speculation.
